My neighbor and I went from enemies to friends

For five years my neighbor and I fought constantly. His tree dropped leaves in my yard. My dog barked at his cat. We complained about each other to the municipality. It was exhausting. Then last winter he had a heart attack. No one else was around. I called the ambulance and waited with him. In the hospital he thanked me with tears in his eyes. I felt ashamed of how much energy I wasted on petty conflicts. When he recovered we had coffee and actually talked. Turns out we both lost our wives recently. We were both lonely and taking our pain out on each other. Now we have coffee every Sunday. He is one of my closest friends. Life is too short for unnecessary wars with people who could be allies.
